...on so many levels

Cotton candy and a rotten mouth
You know you're so fucked up
You know I couldn't help but have it for you

And everybody knows the way I walk
And knows the way I talk
And knows the way I feel about you
It's all a bunch of shit
And there's nothing to do around here
It's totally fucked up
I'm totally fucked up
Wish you were here

And streets that only turn to boulevards
And houses with back yards
and it's raining like hell on the cars
And everybody knows the way I walk
And knows the way I talk
Knows the way I feel about you
It's all a bunch of shit
And there's nothing to do around here
It's totally fucked
I'm totally fucked
Wish you were here

And if I could have my way
We'd take some drugs
And we'd smile
We'd smile
We'd smile
But not tonight, my dear
Wish you were here
Wish you were here
Wish you were here
Wish you were here

Best Wednesday?

Pictures to come from tonight:

Tweedy was awesome, and this show marked the first time this summer where I have really had the opportunity to enjoy the beauty that is a North Carolina evening.  The crowd was attentive and focused and we got a brilliant, albeit short, performance for our efforts.

The swaying moons were wonderful and I couldn't help but think about the past as Tweedy was enveloped by a field that used to mean so much to me.  The museum of art is a wonderful venue and it sounded great (even the crickets were joining in on the fun.)

Not too many surprises, but a lot of unknown (at least to me) material that blew me away.

Note: Find out who Elizabeth Cotton is.

I got the feeling early on that we might see Tift Merritt out there at some point, but it was not to be.  It was fun to worry that if it did happen that we didn't have cameras present to cover it for no particular reason ;) No complaints though, as there was plenty of personality on that stage.

So here I am, late and needing to sleep, waiting for my G4 battery to go dead so that I can attempt to calibrate it.  Boo.

I need a moment.

Oh!  I almost forgot, Snakes on a MUTHERFUCKIN Plane tomorrow.  I have my tickets, I have my enthusiasm...now, all I need is some fucking snakes, tits, planes, and samuel l's (hehe).

Listening Differently.

I purchased my first iPod a little under two years ago at the Apple Store in Durham, NC (at the Southpoint Mall).  I knew at the time of the purchase that the gadget would be great.  Prior to the purchase I ripped music from my modest cd collection to add to the number of live music files I had in my collection and found myself with about 7,000 songs.

Today, after a purging moment that occurred just prior to me moving last month, I whittled my collection down to just about 11,000 songs.  From Led Zeppelin to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! to Tim Fite to Blackalicious and many things in between, my collection has come to define my past, and in some ways, my future.

Yet, I feel unfulfilled.  I listen to most of the music on my iPod utilizing the shuffle feature, and lately that has been bugging me a bit.  I love the randomness and the weird transitions, but I hate the moments where shuffle seems to get stuck on one band that I am not in the mood to hear (read: The Beatles).  So, lately I have been working hard to listen to full albums once again.  And guess what?  That's nice too.

It seems to me that more and more we are becoming a punchline society, more interested in the feeling we get from a moment than we are in all of the circumstances and actions needed to nurture that feeling.  It's like sex if it were just made up of climaxing.  Sure, it would feel great, but would it really be as fun?

"hey baby"
"hey, sailor"
"uh uh"
"oooo"

zzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZ

So, I submit a plea to everyone.  Listen to your favorite album from beginning to end this week, and appreciate the transitions between songs.  Sit down and watch your favorite movie without any distractions.  Put away your laptop, your bills, your side conversations, and your remote and just enjoy it.  And lastly, take a moment to do the same with your life.  Sit outside for twenty minutes and just listen.  It will soothe your soul.

These Times, They Are A Changin'

THIS is funny.

I'm trying to imagine what Bob dylan would sound like if he was a morning shock jock.  What stunts would he pull?  Who would he prank?  What ethnic group would he offend first?  How about last?  Who could his sidekick be?  Would Phil Lesh read sports?  Would Steve Winwood read Traffic? (HA).

Post Extravaganza

Maybe it's the late night studying, maybe it's an abundance of things to say, or maybe it is fate, but the past 5 hours have featured a lot of posts.  Merry December 1st!!!

iTunes Meme

I don't do these things nearly enough, or do them too much.  Here goes:

Go to your iTunes/Windows Media Player/WinAmp and put it all on shuffle. Say the following questions aloud, and after each one press play. Use the song title as the answer to the question.

What do you think of me, iTunes?
“(Remember The Days of The) Old Schoolyard – Cat Stevens
So I apparently make you feel young again?  That’s nice.

Will I have a happy life?
“Lie In Our Graves” – Dave Matthews Band 8.15.95
This song is about being happy when you die.  I like clear answers.

What do my friends really think of me?
“MFC” – Pearl Jam – Yield
I don’t know what to say to that iTunes.  Are you saying that my friends want to disappear with me so that no one can find us, or that they want to disappear so that I can’t find them?  Are you high, iTunes?

Do people secretly lust after me?
The Sound of Fear – The Eels – Daisies Of The Galaxy
“I can't hear, The sound of fear”  iTunes, I like you because you’re right.  If someone lusts after me then they should just come on up to me and let me know.  If I’m into it, then we can see what happens.  If I’m not, I’ll let ‘em down gently…real gently.

How can I make myself happy?

Tweezer Reprise – Phish 12.01.1994
“Won’t you step into the freezer, and please her with a tweezer”
iTunes…you really need to stop reading my mind.

What should I do with my life?
“Blood On That Rock” – The Word
This is a spiritual instrumental.  Thanks a lot for the help iTunes, it means a lot.

Why must life be so full of pain?
“Paint It Black” – The Rolling Stones – Flashpoint
Not so much of an answer to the question as it is an affirmation that life is full of pain.  However, even though life is painful the melody is beautiful.

How can I maximize my pleasure during sex?
“Oh Well” – Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes
“When I talked to god, I knew he’d understand
He said stick by me and I’ll be your guiding hand”
In my experience, girls get a little bit freaked out when you bring God into the bedroom.  That’s my advice to you iTunes, you twisted fuck.

Will I ever have children?
Move On Down the Line – Roy Orbison
Nice.  Why?  I don’t know, but it’s nice nonetheless

Will I die happy?
“I’ll Stick Around” – Foo Fighters
That’s right…immortality.

Can you give me some advice?
“Smile Lines” – Incubus – A Crow Left Of A Murder
I will work my hardest to develop smile lines.  That would be a fun project.

What do you think happiness is?

“A Tear For Eddie” – Ween
Another instrumental.  At first glance this song may seem sad, but it has always made me happy to listen to it.

What's my favorite fetish?
“Rock and Roll” – Phish – 1/4/03
This is true.

What is my significant other thinking at this very moment?

“Waiting For the Worms” – Pink Floyd – The Wall
Literally, this is disturbing.  Figuratively, she is a dirty girl.

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop?
“Street Fighting Man” – The Rolling Stones
I agree that anyone who tries to figure this age-old question out should be beaten.  Again, iTunes and I agree.

A Case of the Spins

In a development that can only be described as "duh!" MTV has decided to re-air Live 8 this Saturday uninterrupted.  This means that there will be no VJs, no commercials, and no mid-Pink Floyd set commentary about how the music that is being spoken over is profoundly remarkable.

The interesting part of the article, is the statement released by Van Toffler, President of the MTV Networks Music Group:

"At MTV and VH1, we're in a constant and candid dialogue with our audience, and in the wake of the live events last Saturday, our viewers have resoundingly told us online they want to see full-set performances from their favorite artists,"

Who would have thought that viewers of the Music Television Network would actually want to see and hear music?  Seems like a bold move by the network.  Perhaps next they will start showing music videos.
