New York and Carrboro are very different. I do, however, realize after this weekend that I fit in and love them both. New York reaffirmed something about myself that doesn't often get reaffirmed which is that sometimes, it is okay to be an asshole.
So much happened this weekend that it is hard to sit down and describe it all. The city simply saturates your senses at every opportunity. I woke up both Saturday and Sunday morning with my heart racing and I have to wonder if that was due to improv or the city itself. It seems that the city just kicks you in the ass in the morning, says "Hey, fucker. Get the fuck up and enjoy me."
I spent Saturday afternoon walking around by myself and enjoying the grid. I happened upon the Flatiron building which made me think about the past. I sat down in Madison Park next to Flatiron and thought about the future for a moment. It was pretty surreal.
It was nice to be alone in the middle of all of that.
The marathon itself was awesome. There were many great performances and some not so great. The people at UCB are incredible though and the marathon seemed to operate without a hitch. Thank you to everyone that made that happen.
So, now on to the DSI shows. They were awesome. All of the performers that made the trek from Carrboro did great work. Squire and Killer Rabbit had great shows. Considering that those teams were cast just three weeks ago speaks volumes about the "interchangeable" nature of the theater company here. We are all close, and we all like to play with each other. Mister Diplomat had to follow I Eat Pandas, which was one of the most enjoyable shows that I have ever seen. They killed it.
As far as our show on Sunday afternoon, it is tough to give an objective review let alone try and speak on behalf of the team. So I will simply say that it was a joy to perform at UCB and I had a lot of fun. It is so reassuring to know that we are all comfortable enough with one another that a big show like this can be so successful. We supported the shit out of each other and we found some really fun material to play around with.
So, after a long weekend (and a long day of recovery) I am back and ready to rock out. 24Live is next, and it's time to get to work.
